Description: PHOTO CREDIT: CINCINNATI MUSEUM CENTER Army Ensign Francis Luce, who oversaw 18 soldiers, arrived at North Bend about March 30, 1789. Luce built a blockhouse within a week, but North Bend founder John Cleves Symmes said it was too small to shelter any residents from attack by Indians. One of Luce's men deserted, one was killed by Indians and four were badly wounded during an Indian attack May 21, 1789, near North Bend. provided photo/Cincinnati Museum Center
