Description: Toshizo Hijikata, the deputy director of the Shinsengumi, fought in various parts of the country and fought the Battle of Hakodate over Ezo. This is a portrait of him allegedly taken at Tamoto Photo Studio during his stay in Hakodate for nearly half a year. The photo says "Hakodate City Control, President of the Court". Hijikata continued the fierce battle with the remnants of the Shinsengumi and the former Shogunate army, but before surrendering, it was reported that he was shot dead by a government soldier near the Ippongi barrier between Hakodate city and Goryokaku.
