Description: Mirror view in diascope of an autochrome of Percy MacKaye (1875–1956) as Alwyn, the poet, a character in Percy MacKaye's play Sanctuary: A Bird Masque, in rehearsal for first performance at the Meriden Bird Club sanctuary dedication in New Hampshire. The original is a photograph: autochrome, color; 5×7 in. The play, written in verse, told of a hunter’s redemption by his prey, the Bird Spirit. At a time when demand for feathers in hats and other products was harming entire species, the play helped promote the wild bird conservation movement.[1]
