Description: Built in 1882, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by H. P. McDonald, and constructed as the primary structure of the State College of Kentucky, which eventually became the University of Kentucky in 1917, and is the oldest structure on the campus. The building served various purposes for the university throughout its history, before being gutted by a fire in 2001, leaving only the exterior brick and stone walls standing. Following the fire, the building’s interior was rebuilt and a new, modernized roof was added, with the building being reopened in the fall of 2004. The building features a red brick exterior, corinthian pilasters, four-over-four windows with decorative hoods, arched bays at the first floor and the center bays of the second and third floors of the building’s exterior, brick corbeling, a replacement hipped roof and tower, built in a Postmodern style to mimic the originals destroyed in the fire, and a multi-story rear porch. The building today houses the main administration offices of the University of Kentucky.
