Description: Diagram of British No. 1 Direct Action percussion fuze, with cap, Mk III. Armstrong fuze in service 1900 - 1918. Requires a heavy impact to activate. Has no loose or movable parts to move forward on impact. Head of fuze has a copper disc supporting a steel needle over a detonator. The needle must be crushed in to explode the fuze. A cap or screw plug covers the top of the fuze to provide safety during transport, and is removed just before loading.
