Description: Newport Station, with the Up Red Dragon express, View NW, from the main Down platform; ex-Great Western main lines from London, Bristol etc., also Gloucester, Birmingham etc. and Hereford, Shrewsbury and the North-west, to Cardiff, Swansea and West Wales. Several lines from the Eastern and Western Valleys also came to Newport, making it one of the busiest railway stations in Britain, with about 250 trains (two-thirds being freight trains, which passed on the two centre lines) passing each way every 24 hours. The 'Red Dragon' was the 07.30 Carmarthen to Paddington, on this day headed (from Swansea) by BR Standard Class 7 'Britannia' 4-6-2 No. 70029 'Shooting Star'.
