Su gran capacidad y prestigio militar hicieron que fuese considerado el mejor estratega del siglo XIX español, lo que llevó a que el gobierno de la Primera República Española le pusiera al mando, en 1874, del Tercer Cuerpo del Ejército del Norte para luchar contra los carlistas.
