Description: This is the only intact remaining old retail building on the Swain County side of Whittier, North Carolina, and was built by the Moody family in the late 19th Century. The wood-frame house and store sits in what was once the middle of the town’s commercial district, directly across the street from the site of the town’s former Railroad depot. One of the few mixed-use structures in the town, the building served as both a house and a store for the Moody Family, and sat next to several wooden storefronts at the center of town. Following the decline of the town due to the Great Depression and the gradual displacement of the remaining businesses to the opposite side of the river in Jackson County along US Highway 19, the store was closed and the space renovated to become part of the residential portion of the house, which it remains today.
