Description: The Northeast Vineyard and Garden Pavilion at Monticello. In his day, Jefferson, a fan of European wines, had great difficulty cultivating the Vitis Vinifera grape species at Monticello. Native grapes were more easily grown but lacked quality. Today, with more modern methods of cultivation, this area in North Central Virginia produces a better quality of wine. Jefferson, however, was considered the most influential viticulturist of his time.
