Description: A view from Station 6 of the north end of the mound. The square holes are not rooms, but are instead test pits. The material removed from the pits is where artifacts are recovered from and the partitions between the pits is where the archaeological stratification is exposed and left in situ to preserve the archaeological record. The pit is dug until sterile subsoil is found. The area covered by the black geotextile was the northern wall of the mound, and is nearly 5 feet thick. Photo from the 2011 Annual Open House at Mesa Grande, hosted by the Arizona Museum of Natural History, the Mesa Grande Neighborhood Alliance, and the Southwest Archaeology Team. This event is the one day each year that the Mesa Grande site is open to the public.
