Description: Magdalen College School. Wainfleet's most famous son was Bishop William Waynflete, born William Patten in 1398. He graduated from Oxford, became Master of Winchester School, headmaster and provost of Eton and became Bishop of Winchester in 1447. In 1457 he founded Magdalen College, Oxford and founded the school here at Wainfleet in 1484. His academic achievements contrasted with his political aptitude ... a Yorkist through the Wars of the Roses, he supported Richard III financially before the ill-fated Battle of Bosworth in 1485. He died a year later in 1486 and is buried in Winchester Cathedral.
