Description: The Thimble is a stone marker off Hanover Point (to the left here). There was a battery of guns at Freshwater Bay, and during practice firing there was a danger of shells coming back inland if they weren't kept to the west of this marker. The chalk headland leading up to the Needles is in the distance on the right, and in the far distance on the left the Isle of Purbeck.
