They then .asked for a parley; and theirchief, who could speak French, wanted to discuss thesituation with the commander of the fort. There was ayoung man in the garrison who could also speak theFrench language, who asked the chief what he wanted tosay. The chief, who was concealed behind the bank ofthe river, began to talk. The young man answered thathe could not hear him; whereupon the Indian, to makehimself heard, raised himself a little above the riversbank, when the young man fired his rifle, and the chieffell mortally wounded. Having lost their chief, the Indians abandoned the at- 158 FORT MAD ISO X. tempt to destroy the garrison, and fled. They returned,however, with a large force the following year, and,being again repulsed, they once more besieged the fort. Text Appearing After Image: St. Joseph Cathedral. But thesewere finally exhausted, and preparations were made toabandon the fort. The soldiers determined to retreat no farther,and a new fort was built, which was called Fort Edwards. After the burning of Fort Madison, the first whitesettler was Peter Williams, who built his cabin near theruins of the old fort in 1832. It was my good fortune to visit Fort Madison this sea-son.
