Description: Memorial to bluegrass musician Lester Flatt (1914-1979) in Sparta, Tennessee, located in the Southeastern United States. Flatt, born a few miles to the north in Overton County, spent most of his life in Sparta. This memorial is located at Liberty Square, in front of the White County Courthouse. The plaque reads: Dedicated in honor of LESTER FLATT of Sparta, Tennessee Lester Raymond Flatt (1914-1979) was one of the forefathers of the American Bluegrass style of music. Liberty Square — Sparta, TN October 13, 2001 A Tennessee Historical Commission marker is located a few blocks to the east at the junction of US-70 and Flatt Street, and reads: He was born at Duncans Chapel near the boundary of Putnam and Overton Counties, Tennessee, and moved to Sparta at an early age where he made his permanent home. A bluegrass music pioneer and composer, Mr. Flatt was also a member of the Grand Ole Opry, and star of radio, television, and the movies. He performed at Carnegie Hall and entertained audiences around the world as the "Baron of Bluegrass Music." He is buried in the Sparta Oaklawn Memorial Cemetery."
