Description: Demonstration of effects of a light diffuser in close-up photography. Left a young tree frog (Hyla arborea) sitting in direct sunlight on sedge leaves. With the help of a diffuser (in this case a white fabric-covered "studio umbrella"; middle image) then the situation was shaded artificially. The result is shown in the right image: The previously hard light and shadow contrasts were alleviated, "blown-out" highlight areas avoided, harsh shadows eliminated and the background was calmed a bit. A similar effect would have had a bright cloud in front of the sun.
