Description: Láithreach (Lauragh): Derreen Garden This woodland garden was designed and planted by the 5th Marquess of Landsdowne in the 1870s. The most remarkable features in the garden are the tree ferns, Dicksonia antarctica. A grove of these tree ferns, which originally come from Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, was planted here around 1900, and is shown in the photograph. These tree ferns have become completely naturalised, constantly renewing themselves by self-sown spores. A couple of individual examples can be found in the grid square to the north 263195
