Description: Emperor Henry IV Jumps from the Ship of his Kidnapper, the Archbishop of Cologne, engraving by Bernhard Rode, 1781. "Henry the Fourth, already crowned emperor during his boyhood, is kidnapped from his mother Agnes by the archbishop Anno on board a ship at Kaiserswerth on the Rhine. His regent mother stands in utmost misery at the castle with her court entourage. Her son jumps out of the ship into the Rhine, at which the archbishop, horrified, raises his hands to the heavens. Count Ekbert of Braunschweig stretches out his hands most pityingly to catch him. - History also relates that risking his own life, this count immediately jumped after him and saved him."
