Description: The former John Jacob Astor Hotel (now an apartment building) in downtown Astoria, Oregon, viewed from the northwest. The building is L-shaped, not square, and this view from across the intersection of 14th St. and Commercial St. shows its two long sides, whereas its south and east sides are less than half as wide. The narrow recessed area, with a small open area at each floor except the first two, is where a fire escape was attached, until it was removed during renovation work in the mid-1980s.
