Description: The launch Nautilus was the first vessel built by John I. Thornycroft, begun in 1859, when he was 16, and completed in 1862. Although the John I. Thornycroft Shipbuilding Company was officially founded in 1864, the Nautilus was given yard No. 1 in the archives.
