Description: This is an official U.S. Navy image, taken by a U.S. Navy photographer's mate for use on official Chaplain Dept documents (including postcards) as part of a joint Chaplain/Public Affairs outreach initiative. It shows an 11 foot x 7 foot wall hanging on the interior wall of the Commodore Levy Chapel, Naval Station Norfolk, the Navy's oldest Jewish chapel. The idea for the creation of the wall-hanging was that of Jewish Chaplain (Rabbi) Arnold E. Resnicoff, who had the design created and donated by a local Norfolk artist Leonette Adler, who also supervised the creation of the actual wall-hanging, with Naval personnel and families cutting and stitching together the cloth-on-cloth wall hanging. The wall-hanging includes the biblical verse from Isaiah, "Sing God's praise anew from around the world, all who sail the sea," because of its special meaning for Navy personnel. The wall-hanging was dedicated to the memory of Jack Irwin Resnicoff, Rabbi Resnicoff's father, at a special community wide celebration -- "Jewish pride in the Navy day" -- September 12, 1982, sponsored by The Commodore Levy Chapel, that attracted men and women from around the Tidewater Virginia area. Jack Resnicoff passed away during the time the congregation was sewing together the wall-hanging.
