Image: James VI tablet from the Netherbow Port
Description: An impressive tablet rescued from the Netherbow town gate of Edinburgh which was demolished in 1764. It is affixed to the wall of a modern extension at the rear of John Knox's House in the High Street. The initials IR and AR stand for Iacobus Rex and Anna Regina. It bears James' motto "Blessed Are The Peacemakers" (Matthew 5:9), summing up what was arguably the main achievement of his reign: peace between England and Scotland, especially in the troubled Border Marches of the two kingdoms.
