Description: Calamagrostis rubescens—Pinegrass. An important understory plant in Douglas-fir and other coniferous forests through it range from British Columbia to Manitoba in Canada and the Northern Rockies into Colorado as well as the coastal mountains from Washington south to Monterey County in California. Nearly every grazing animal, including bears, deer, elk, and bison depend on this grass for food throughout its range. Since pinegrass readily resprouts from rhizomes after fire it is often the dominant plant in burnt over areas the first year following a fire. The stalk photographed is from a plant at Regional Parks Botanic Garden located in Tilden Regional Park near Berkeley, CA.
