Image: Iron, griddle (AM 1966.118-1)
Description: Griddle iron; aka "girdle", flat circular steel plate with flexible semi-circular handle and hooking ring on top; used for making pikelets and scones. A "girdle" type of griddle differs from other griddles in that is is hung over the heat source, rather than being set on top of it. This design was used particularly in Scotland. A maker of one was called either a “Girdilmaker”, “Girdler” or “Girdlesmith.”
