Description: Historical marker placed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Ipswich MA, denoting some features of the history of Ipswich lace (also known as bobbin or pillow lace) in the region in previous centuries. Sign is a cast iron sort of sign with a black border and black text on white background. Top has the dates 1630 and 1930. Between the dates is the seal of the Commonwealth at the time, which is the currently disputed arm with sword over the Indigenous person below that. Sign text says in all capital letters: "Pillow Lace | From the date of its settlement by John Winthrop and twelve associates, 1630, Agawam (Ipswich) was the seat of pillow lace making. By 1790 the annual production was 41,979 yards. This craft continued until the introduction of lace machinery. Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary Commission"
