Description: Photograph of Inuit actress Columbia Eneutseak (center, rear) with her family, an illustration in the trade publication The Moving Picture World (New York, N.Y.), August 5, 1911, p. 291. Born at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, Columbia later performed in several American silent films, including The Way of the Eskimo (1911). Here 18-year-old Columbia poses with three of her siblings and with her mother Esther, who is holding her baby Oscar. Esther's other children, in addition to Columbia, are her son Norman (left) and Florence (in front of Columbia). All are wearing traditional Inuit attire and are posing in front of a painted backdrop depicting the hindquarters of a dead polar bear and the activities of other "Eskimos" in the distance; walrus tusk in foreground.
