Description: Hurst Castle interior, eastern end. Interior of Hurst Castle seen from top of Henry VIII's 1541 castle. The brick wings to the old stone castle were built in the 1870s following recommendations of a Royal Commission on how to defend Britain from the French. They contain casemates armoured with alternating layers of cast iron and teak for the huge 38-ton muzzle-loading guns.
