Title: Hunter S. Thompson (self-portrait photograph - Hell's Angels author photo)
Credit: The image was extracted and retouched from a scan of the 1st ed. Hell's Angels dust jacket via 1stDibs.com, also available on Commons.
Author: Photo by Thompson; first published on the 1st ed. Hell's Angels dust jacket by Random House.
Permission: No permission is required. This image is a modification of the 1st ed. Hell's Angels dust jacket, which is a public domain work (see the "Permission" section at Hell's Angels by Hunter S. Thompson (1967 1st ed jacket back cover).jpg for more information). Hell's Angels dust jacket entered the public domain. There are at least two alternate versions of Thompson's self-portrait, published much later, that presumably remain under copyright. For example, the dust jacket of the 1999 Modern Library edition of Hell's Angels used a higher-quality version of Thompson's photograh with much more detail than the 1967 version. A much larger print of the photograph, typically titled Self-Portrait, on the Road to Tijuana, became available through fine art sellers (see ArtNet). The larger print (27¾ in. × 27¾ in.) has more background detail and portions that are not seen on the Hell's Angels back-cover version, which is tightly cropped around Thompson's head and has a "blank" solid-color background.
