Image: Hawk Littlejohn sweet grass braid
Description: In addition to this flute's double carved mountain-pattern decorative leather wraps, another Hawk Littlejohn “signature” on some of his more ornate flutes is the addition of a sweet grass braid. A Littlejohn sweet grass braid is located on this flute beneath the knot-end of the flute’s southerly woodland leather wrap (see photo). Sweet grass (Hierochloe odorata), or “holy grass,” is an aromatic herb found in North America and Europe. Due to Hawk Littlejohn’s interest and expertise in Native American medicine and herbs, the addition of braided sweet grass to his flutes probably carried personal; medicinal, and/or spiritual connotations.
