The writer must, how-ever, record the conviction that few cities in our country duringthe past fifty years have been so richly endowed with service ashas Cambridge. At the beginning of its charter life, MayorJames D. Green set the example of uprightness, ability, andfaithful work. In a eulogy delivered not long before his death,the Rev. Andrew P. Peabody called attention to the standardset by the first mayor and the faithfulness with which it hadbeen maintained by his successors, and, for the most part, byall who have held public office.
