Description: Grave of William Carey, India, ca. 1920 Black and white lantern slide showing the grave of missionary William Carey (1761-1834), his second wife Charlotte Emelia Carey (1761-1821) and third wife Grace Carey (d. 1835). Reverend Dr William Carey founded the Baptist Missionary Society in 1792 and began its first mission to India in 1794. He worked in the Danish colony of Serampore, and translated the Bible into Bengali, Sanskrit and into regional Indian dialects. Carey was buried in the Mission Burial Ground at Serampore. After falling into disrepair, the grave was renovated in 2009.
