Description: George Bush was free Black man who helped establish the first American settlement north of the Columbia River in what was Oregon Territory. He brought cuttings of butternut trees from his farm in Missouri with him across the Oregon Trail. This tree at his new homestead in Tumwater, Washington grew from one of those cuttings. It was considered the oldest and largest living butternut tree in existence. The tree died in 2021. Several new trees have been established from this original
