Description: Original 1856 Gay Head Light lightning ball assembly mounted with straight-tipped Benjamin Franklin lightning rod spire. The assembly in this photo came from the top of the current Gay Head Light lighting room where the Fresnel lens was once installed. The Ben Franklin rod and support ball assembly shown in this photograph has apparently been struck several times by lightning - as evidenced by scars on the rod and the cracked ball. This lightning rod assembly is presently located on the Edgartown grounds of the Martha's Vineyard Museum.
