Description: Gated entrance to Grosmont Castle Founded by the Normans, probably before 1200, to control the lands they had won in N.Gwent. At that time construction would have been earth and timber and the great ditch of that ringwork castle survives. In 1201 the castle passed to Hubert de Burgh, a powerful Marcher lord who rebuilt the castle in stone. There are various additions in the 14th century by the earls of Lancaster, including the chamber block with its tall, elegant chimney and extension to the gatehouse to incorporate the drawbridge.
