Description: General Matthew B. Ridgway, USA, became the second Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) upon General Eisenhower’s departure and subsequent retirement. He became the first U.S. Commander-in-Chief, Europe (USCINCEUR) on the day the command activated, 1 August 1952. Just prior to his arrival in Europe, General Ridgway had served as the commander of all U.S. and United Nations (UN) forces in the Korean War since April 1951. Before that, he was a distinguished commander in the Mediterranean and European theaters during World War II (WWII) having led the 82nd Airborne Division and later, the XVIII Airborne Corps.
