Description: Virginia state historical marker for Fort Trial, near present-day Bassett, Virginia. Fort Trial was built in 1756 near the banks of the Smith River to protect against Indian raids during the French and Indian War. George Washington inspected Fort Trial in 1756, the same year it was built. It was abandoned near the end of the 18th century as hostilities between the colonists and the Indians abated.
