Description: Boat A is close hauled. Boat B is on a beam reach. Boat C is on a broad reach. VT = True wind speed VB = Boat speed VA = Apparent wind speed FT = Force on sail tangential to sail cord (lift component) FR = Driving force component FLAT = Lateral component Note that as the boat sails further from the wind, the Apparent wind becomes smaller and the heeling moment becomes less. Note also that the boat speed is highest on the beam reach.
