Description: Escomb Saxon Church. Escomb Saxon church was constructed around 670 A.D and incorporated many Roman stones from the nearby fort of Binchester 10466 Now restored, it is one of the finest examples of early Christian architecture in Northern Europe. The church is a peaceful place for Christian pilgrimage and also home to two colonies of bats. The smallest colony is made up of 'Whiskered Bats', whilst the largest colony is of the more common 'Pipistrel' variety. This photograph nicely shows the location of the church in the centre of Escomb village: 284952.
