Image: Elmside Park Mounds
Description: Located in Elmside Park at the corner of Lakeland and Maples Avenue in Madison, Wisconsin, these effigy mounds of a lynx and a bear were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. Together with the nearby Hudson Mound, they are remnants of a cluster of some 22 mounds that stretched from the Yahara River to Olbrich Park on the northeastern shore of Lake Monona, almost all of which were destroyed by residential development. Beyond the three preserved effigies, the cluster originally contained 12 bird effigies (one with a wingspan of 568 feet) as well as 10 conicals and 4 linears.
