Image: Edgartown Harbor Light - circa 1984
Description: The rust-covered abandoned condition of the light in 1987 just prior to Vineyard Environmental Research, Inst. (VERI) receiving the light from the USCG via a 30-year license. Due to lack of maintenance funds, the USCG planned to raze the Edgartown Harbor Light and replace it with a steel skeleton tower mounted with a strobe light. The same fate was also planned for the Gay Head Light and East Chop Light. After receiving these three lights, VERI raised funds and completely restored the exterior of the Edgartown Harbor Light. VERI also restored the Gay Head Light and East Chop Light, and, in 1987 opened all three lights to the public for the first time in many decades.
