Description: EMPIRE COTTAGE — stone mansion at the Empire Mine, Empire Mine State Historic Park, in Grass Valley, California. BUILT in the ENGLISH COUNTRY HOME style, and called a COTTAGE to DISTINGUISH it from MR. BOURN'S other SUMMER HOMES and MANSIONS (such as 'Filoli' in Woodside) in the SAN FRANCISCO Bay Area. May show CORNISH design influences, since virtually most the miners at the Empire Mine were from the tin and copper mines of Cornwall, England with experience and expertise in hard rock mining.
