Description: Summer's end is announced by the goldenrod, which is one of the last flowers to bloom in the season. Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) blooms from August through to the first killing frosts in September or October. It grows in colonies which may exceed 100 years of age, and though it is often blamed by hay-fever sufferers for their misery, the fact is its pollen is far too heavy to be carried any distance by the wind; most allergy problems are produced by ragweed, which blooms at about the same time.
