Description: This image shows the structure of diopside, a clinopyroxene, viewed along the c axis, which is also the direction of silica chains making up the backbone of the crystal structure. All ion sizes have been reduced to better show the structure, except that silicon ions have been enlarged to emphasize the silica backbone. Some of the "I-beam" pairs of silica chain are marked in green.
