Description: Crewe War Memorial. 20 ft. high. In 1992 when the photo was taken, the memorial was located in the centre of Crewe, facing East. Britannia carries a palm in her right hand and a trident in her left. 10ft high, 26 cwt.It is very similar to the memorials at Troon and Morley. General Sir Ian Hamilton unveiled the Memorial on 14th June 1924. The memorial cost £1,600 which was raised by public subscription and a generous donation form the railway company. Around 15,000 people attended the unveiling ceremony. Cast in about twenty pieces. Restored and re-located 2006. Work arranged by Walter Gilbert in association with Louis Weingartner, Donald Gilbert and H. H. Martyn of Cheltenham. Modelling by Walter and Donald Gilbert with detail by Louis Weingartner.
