Description: Clearing with Silver Birch on Pitstone Common The natural progression from open land to woodland in this areas starts with hawthorn, then silver birch (which is comparatively short-lived) and then major woodland trees. An open clearing with silver birch, but no undergrowth, hawthorn, or older trees is clearly managed perhaps to provide grazing for the deer. It is worth noting that areas of the Ashridge Estate with many silver birch are comparatively newly wooded.
