Inspirée d'un fait divers, cette scène humoristique fut ajoutée à la pièce de Regnard et Dufresny, La foire Saint-Germain, créée en 1695. Scaramouche et Arlequin, déguisés, s'apostrophent avec une véhémence caricaturale.
