Image: Circumstellar Disks HD 141943 and HD 191089
Description: The two panels at the top of this image reveal debris discs around young Sun-like stars. These were uncovered in archival images taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. Hubble's Near Infrared Camera and Multi-object Spectrometer observed these discs in near-infrared in 2007. Astronomers blocked out the bright light from each star in order to analyse the faint light reflected off dust particles in the discs. The illustration beneath each image depicts the orientation of the debris discs.
Astronomers retrieved these images from the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) and used more powerful image analysis techniques to search for planetary systems.
