Description: Church of the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Libertyville (1925). It is the headquarters of the Sebrian Orthodox Church in the United States and Canada, and is the headquarters of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of New Gracanica - Midwestern America. Serbian immigrants came to America to work in Pittsburgh and Cleveland steel mills. Many moved to Chicago to work in the slaughterhouses and factories. During the Nazi occupation of Yugoslavia, the Chicago area became an area of refuge for those able to escape. Peter II of Yugoslavia lived at the monastery in exile following his ousting by Josip Broz Tito. He died there in 1970 and became the first European monarch buried in the United States. This January, it was announced that Peter's remains will be returned to the Royal Family Mausoleum in Oplenac, Serbia.
