Lithograph by Thomas Armstrong after an original portrait by Charles Nahl, in the 1856 issue of Hutchings' California Magazine. The original was a life-size oil painting by Charles Nahl exhibited during the Mechanics' Institute Fair in 1857 at San Francisco. In 1858, this painting and Nahl's Emigrants Crossing the Plains were considered the best works in the exhibition. [1][2]
