Description: The Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, situated in Barbadoes Street, is regarded as one of the finest examples of church architecture in Australasia. The Cathedral is often referred to as 'The Basilica'; its style based on that of the old Roman basilicas. The foundation stone was laid on 10 February 1901 and the Cathedral was blessed and opened on 12 February 1905 at a cost of NZ£52,000.
