Description: The subject is recorded in Roger of Wendover's 'Flores historiarum': on St Edmund's Day, 20 November 1214, the nobles and barons of England met at St Edmund's Abbey to swear that, if King John refused to uphold the liberties and laws granted to the church under the Cardinal-Archbishop of Canterbury, Stephen Langton (d.1228), they would withdraw their allegiance to the crown.
